Worst case scenario ?

I am making a strange observation.In the midst of all the catastrophic, cataclysmic, chaotic and cathartic events, the world seems to go all but quiet.

At first I noticed the frequency of the news updates getting less, then even the updates on the websites of the BBC, Al Jazeera or the New York Times seemed to come to a mere trickle. It is like the world is holding its breath.

Only the social media are buzzing.

In particular with Japan I found it interesting, how slow the media  came round to report that we are actually facing a disaster of such enormous magnitude and scope, like we have never seen before. And I am not only talking about the humanitarian toll of tens of thousands people dead, injured, displaced or having lost loved ones, I am talking about the global impact of a worst case scenario actually happening.

Maybe it is because nobody thought a nuclear meltdown in the wake of a twin disaster of an earthquake cum tsunami was too far out to actually happen – and yet, it is unfolding.

In the wake of the events in Japan, as the world is watching in disbelief  the workers at the nuclear reactors to retake control after blast and fire, the battle for Lybia rages on, Bahrain called a state of emergency and Saudi troops are rushing in, Palestinian hold “unity” rallies and Israel intercepts an arms laden ship.

Just a normal day in 2011. Cataclysmic events are beating down like a hailstorm. Maybe it is more than the human mind can take ? An isolated event, like a flood, an environmental disaster or a even a coup d’état, take much time to digest, analyse and categorise. How much was written and talked about the BP oil spill and response, how closely did we witness the flood in Queensland , how much did we participate in the Tunisian and Egyptian protests, but now ? We see news tickers and live updates, but I am missing the voice of the budding conscious journalism, to strike up a tune of solidarity, solace and sanity in a world that is turning faster and faster. It seems like the human mind is crying out – enough. I cant take any more.

Well, if only.

The title has been chosen to allude to the illusion of the human mind being in control over the forces of nature.

Put your soul to work

By Carolyne Myss

As we all know by now, the Earth has shifted once again. Just the slightest change from deep beneath the waters, a crack in the fabric of her lining, and islands quake while tsunami waves rush across shorelines. We awake believing the world ˆ our world ˆ is stable, only to learn again and again that this Earth is as much a living, breathing, moving, active instrument of life as we are. It is the grandest live organism we shall ever encounter, this wondrous Being that sustains us each second of our life. Weeks ago, a cyclone of unprecedented size hit Australia and an earthquake shortly afterwards moved the ground beneath Christchurch, New Zealand. Buildings fell like toys, leaving much of the town in pieces. Who knows what the final death toll will be in Japan?

It would appear that the pace as well as the intensity of long-predicted earth activity and climate change is accelerating. Like many people familiar with prediction-oriented literature, all sorts of reasons can be put forward as to why the Earth goes through a period of increased seismic activity. Scientists will come up with “scientific” data, as expected. From my point of view, if they were so knowledgeable in the first place, the massive abuses to the Earth would have never occurred because they would have used their scientific data to protect the Earth. They’re great at riding the caboose on the train of environmental change. Unfortunately, the few who have had the courage to attempt to direct the engine have been thwarted by corporate and political interests who insist that all data suggesting even a hint of climate change activity is a liberal conspiracy.

Meltdown

The operating reactors at Fukushima Daiichi power station automatically shut down during the earthquake.
But after subsequent cooling failures, two of them went into partial meltdown.

Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben
Muss von Christo Zeugnis geben

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

“Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;”

This is a verse from Yeat’s enigmatic poem ” The Second Coming” and I keep thinking of it ever since the historic events on Tahrir Square kept unfolding.

I wonder what Yeats would say if he was to watch the unfolding events of 2011. The year does not even count 12 weeks yet, and we have seen dramatic events and paradigm shifts happening in rapid sequence.

First there was the Jasmine revolution in Tunisia, that resulted in the departure of the autocratic president Ben Ali on January 14. Then there was the two week stand-off between ten of thousand protesters  and the government, that led to the departure of teh autocratic president Mubarak.

This was followed by protests across the region. We are watching live, via Al Jazeera, Facebook and Twitter, how the governments are trying to contain the wild-fire. There are protest movements building up throughout Algeria, Morocco, Lebanon, Jordan, Ye,en, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Iran and Iraq. In Bahrain and Lybia the government is using deadly force against their own people, with Lybia’s Colonel Gadaffi refusing to end his 42 year rule and Lybian military jets are bombing civilians and gangs of mercenaries roaming the streets.
