Every girl is a princess

A free spirit named little mischief

I am a big believer in archetypes – not in terms of identification, but because of their powerful symbolism, pointing us to hidden patterns and uncovering beliefs about ourselves.
Archetypes are about “what we always do” and they are a great tool to uncover individual strengths and weaknesses on the path ofself-discovery.

Yesterday my nieces asked me which Disney princess I was. I said I did not know and so they did the quiz with me. I turned out to be ” Pocahontas”.

The Tao is the way

November Sky

Verse 57 is about letting go. All of it.

Becoming aware of the myriard of ways how we control our life, is at the centre of liberation. Decisions, fixed plans, concepts…just observe yourself to understand how much we are still trying to influence the course of life. Desires – and in particular those that say ” I don’t want” is what is holding us back from simply being what we are. The more we do not allow ourselves to be, the more we hold ourselves back, the more we seek to control or manipulate, we will experience low confidence and energy.

Observe and let go, of the many things we are still attached to. Beliefs, systems, identifications – let go and let god.

57

If you want to be a great leader,
you must learn to follow the Tao.
Stop trying to control.
Let go of fixed plans and concepts,
and the world will govern itself.

The more prohibitions you have,
the less virtuous people will be.
The more weapons you have,
the less secure people will be.
The more subsidies you have,
the less self-reliant people will be.

Therefore the Master says:
I let go of the law,
and people become honest.
I let go of economics,
and people become prosperous.
I let go of religion,
and people become serene.
I let go of all desire for the common good,
and the good becomes common as grass.

A historic Thanksgiving

Cover New Yorker, Thanksgiving 2001

When I lived in America I was first introduced to the tradition of Thanksgiving. I knew nothing about it and moreover, I did not have a family to go to without crossing an ocean. So we introduced the alternate Thanksgiving, which included a large international crowd and Viennese cooking.

Thanksgiving day definitely felt very different from any other day. The stores would close by 4pm and the traffic would all but stop. Everyone returned home for the turkey dinner and the ubiquitous pumpkin pie. I secretly considered myself  lucky, because I cared for neither in particular and anyway – I did not have the heritage.

But I do vividly remember the Thanksgiving day of 2001.

Limitations are part of life

(a painture by József Kecse)

We usually try to find more and more limitation, because we think that freedom is something where there are no limitations.

*

True freedom is to realize our limitations.

Lion King: We are One

As you go through life you’ll see
There is so much that we
Don’t understand

And the only thing we know
Is things don’t always go
The way we planned

But you’ll see every day
That we’ll never turn away
When it seems all your dreams come undone

We will stand by your side
Filled with hope and filled with pride
We are more than we are
We are one

If there’s so much I must be
Can I still just be me
The way I am?

Can I trust in my own heart
Or am I just one part
Of some big plan?

Even those who are gone
Are with us as we go on
Your journey has only begun

Tears of pain, tears of joy
One thing nothing can destroy
Is our pride, deep inside
We are one

We are one, you and I
We are like the earth and sky
One family under the sun

All the wisdom to lead
All the courage that you need
You will find when you see
We are one

Confidence

Cause and effect ( photo by Catrin)

Recently I noticed a major change in myself – I do no longer fake confidence.

The way I used to do that was by constantly re-assuring others that we were on the right track, doing the right thing and absolutely everything was working out as planned. It is an old habit, as I am the first-born and from early on I took responsibility for others. Old habits are diehard and today I recognise the many tactics of manipulation I applied, to build my own sense of security.

Taking the lead has been engrained in me. As long as I can think back I have been in charge for the decision making of a group – privately or publicly. And when I did not get to be the formal leader, I would soon be the one influencing the decisions. As long as I had the means of determining the fate of the group, I felt I lived up to expectations – and felt safe.
