The Poet

Marc Chagall " Orpheus" (1959)

by Hermann Hesse

Only on me, the lonely one,
The unending stars of the night shine,
The stone fountain whispers its magic song,
To me alone, to me the lonely one
The colorful shadows of the wandering clouds
Move like dreams over the open countryside.
Neither house nor farmland,
Neither forest nor hunting privilege is given to me,
What is mine belongs to no one,
The plunging brook behind the veil of the woods,
The frightening sea,
The bird whir of children at play,
The weeping and singing, lonely in the evening, of a man secretly in love.
The temples of the gods are mine also, and mine
the aristocratic groves of the past.
And no less, the luminous
Vault of heaven in the future is my home:
Often in full flight of longing my soul storms upward,
To gaze on the future of blessed men,
Love, overcoming the law, love from people to people.
I find them all again, nobly transformed:
Farmer, king, tradesman, busy sailors,
Shepherd and gardener, all of them
Gratefully celebrate the festival of the future world.
Only the poet is missing,
The lonely one who looks on,
The bearer of human longing, the pale image
Of whom the future, the fulfillment of the world
Has no further need. Many garlands
Wilt on his grave,
But no one remembers him.

Enter it like a hero

If you desire to see
eternal life
or discover wealth
in poverty
don’t follow your path timidly
to discover real life,
enter it like a hero.

Healing

You can never breathe
healing to your body
till you cut off
worries from your breath
though you’re weary at times
surely you can pull through

One day

This heart will one day
find you a sweetheart
this soul will one day
take you to the beloved
seize your pain as a blessing
your pain will one day
lead you to healing.

I shall give my heart to you

Johann Sebastian Bach St Matthew Passion BWV 244

Ich will dir mein Herze schenken,
I shall give my heart to you,
Senke dich, mein Heil, hinein!
Come down, my salvation, and bury yourself within it!
Ich will mich in dir versenken;
I shall bury myself in you;
Ist dir gleich die Welt zu klein,
If the world is too small for you
Ei, so sollst du mir allein
ah, then you alone to me shall
Mehr als Welt und Himmel sein.
Be more than the world and heaven.

Poking them with a sharp stick

Chronicles about Alexey Navalny and the Web site RosPil, which is dedicated to exposing state corruption in Russia. In the past three years Navalny has established himself as a kind of Russian Julian Assange or Lincoln Steffens. On his blog, he has uncovered criminal self-dealing in major Russian oil companies, banks, and government ministries, an activity he calls “poking them with a sharp stick.”

Choices & Doing Not-Doing

Giovanni Bellini ” Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane” (1465) National Gallery, London

6

The Tao is called the Great Mother
empty yet inexhaustible,
it gives birth to infinite worlds.

It is always present within you.
You can use it any way you want.

The purpose of our existence is creation. Life is expressing itself through us at any moment, by any tiny, little action we take. Let us always be aware of it, because it is the choices we make, that determine the quality of our experience. Life does not know “pleasant” or ” unpleasant”, it only knows that what is. But we take this distinction as our guiding principle in life. We seek pleasure and at the same time avoid that what apperas negative, or painful to us. This is how we create suffering, because by making choices guided by fear, and the many different expression of this primary emotion, we act out of resistance. Choices can be made, following the principle of “not my will, but thine”. We own the choice, but let go of the result.  This is how Life creates the infinite worlds.

Following this principle, open to guidance and conscious of the our individual choices, we have a universe to play with.

The melody of fate

“Fado” is the Portugese word for “fate”. It is a form of music characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor. Portugal’s political crisis and potentially being the next domino to fall in Europe, with very uncertain implications for the continent and the world at large, made me think of the fado, which really can be about anything, as long as it follows a certain structure.  I could not find a translation, but Joana Amendoeira’s Fado rosa maria sounds like something one would like to listen to, embracing an uncertain fate…

PS Any Portugese speakers who can help us out with the lyrics ?
