Dora is teaching the Tao

This is a beautiful observation as told by my friend Jill. It made me think of verse 36 of the Tao-te-ching.

Dora the Corgie teacher

Dora had her first training session last Friday with Penelope the dog whisperer.  It was an indepth evaluation so 3 hours and $300 later I found that our little princess is not very obedient.  The trainer said Dora wants what she wants 🙂

For homework, we were given a book and a list of exercises.  Dora went on strike the very next day and wouldn’t listen to most of our commands, even with the lure of treats !  It was so frustrating since I was no longer allowed to repeat the command.  During the session, Jim told Dora to “down” 5 times before she obeyed.  The dog whisperer asked whether he would tell the Dean of Georgetown University to “down” 5 times.  I said I would ask Jim to vaccumn the house at least 5 times 🙂

The last fairy tale

by Martina

Fairies & Tales (Photo by Martina)

The other day I read : “Disney’s latest release Tangled, the modern take on the Rapunzel story, “will be the last fairy tale produced by Disney’s animation group for the foreseeable future,” according to the LA Times.”

The end of animated fairy tales ? Is that a sadness arising ~ or relief at dissolving illusion ?  What of the archetypes ? The beautiful & skillful drawings ?

Democracy

All unseen is coming to light

I am absolutely fascinated by the epochal events unfolding around Wikileaks and the making public of ten of thousands of classified documents, as well as the reaction to it. To me it is not the “what”, but simply the “how”. Transparency as the foundation of true democracy is emerging and we all get to witness it.

Nothing remains hidden, everything is coming to the surface.

“To radically shift regime behavior we must think clearly and boldly for if we have learned anything, it is that regimes do not want to be changed. We must think beyond those who have gone before us, and discover technological changes that embolden us with ways to act in which our forebears could not. Firstly we must understand what aspect of government or neocorporatist behavior we wish to change or remove. Secondly we must develop a way of thinking about this behavior that is strong enough carry us through the mire of politically distorted language, and into a position of clarity. Finally must use these insights to inspire within us and others a course of ennobling, and effective action.”

The wisdom of Rumi

There is something inside that makes me happy

I can’t let you know
all the secrets
I can’t open to you
all the doors
there is something inside
that makes me happy
but I can’t put my finger
on it’s source

A stab in the back

A camel's back

On Sunday afternoon my back went out.

This was kind of surprising, since I am not prone to back pain and moreover have not done anything that normally would have triggered it. There was suddenly a stabbing pain in my lower back that made it difficult to get up, walk and do all the million little movements one would do moving around the house.

So over the next 24 hours I treated my back pain conservatively – giving it a rest, keeping it warm, taking some Tylenol. It did not work.

The next day I tried acupuncture (on myself, which does not work anyway) and then moved on to some stretching and shaking exercises to release the blockage. Nothing. I went to my Pilates training in the evening and only did the very easy exercises, hoping that the use of the abdominal muscles would balance out the over-activity in the back. It did not work and the back strain continued to hold me in an iron-like grip of throbbing, clamping, stubborn pain.

Wasting away

Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease, that affects the lung and other organs. It is associated with malnutrion and low sanitation and housing standards and it is surging dangerously in the developing world. According to the WHO, there will be 10 million new cases this year, the largest number in history.

Tuberculosis can be  cured, but because  it’s diagnosis and treatment pose certain challenges, which require knowledge, information, co-ordination and compliance, it has become a major public health conundrum.

Tuberculosis  is a perfect example of a challenge we do possess all the knowledge and technology necessary to save million of people’s life and moreover, save billions in lost productivity each year. And yet people in developing countries die like flies, slowly and miserably, and with them, whole families impoverish even more. Tuberculosis is the perfect example of an societal imbalance, which we impose on ourselves, ultimately fueled by a society driven by ignorance and greed.

To become aware of the possibilities, but more importantly to reflect on how Tuberculosis in India may be related to us, is a first – and most important – step.

As on the inside, so on the outside. Countries stricken by poverty, corruption and administrative incompetence are a breeding ground for a wasting disease. AIDS, Tuberculosis strike with vengeance, like a symbolic purgatory for wasted resources and talent. So even if no-one of us may be able to directly alleviate this public health disaster, we still can contribute by doing everything we can, to understand that each person afflicted by this disease is as relevant as our next of kin.

And this is our first responsibility as human beings.
